Charlottetown, June 25, 2018 – It's not everyday that the recipient of the Governor General's Academic Medal receives that medal in the presence of the Governor General herself but for Chelsey Wright that special honour happened during the first official visit to Prince Edward Island from Her Excellency, Julie Payette.

“It was a bit surreal to meet the Governor General in person,” said Chelsey, who graduated on Monday evening from Collège de l’Île’s youth worker program. “It was an exciting opportunity to meet one of Canada’s most accomplished women, someone who is a role model for all of us.”

Chelsey began French immersion in grade 7 and graduated from Bluefield High School in 2016. After considering her options - including studying at an off-Island institution - she chose to pursue postsecondary education in French, right here in Prince Edward Island. The warm welcome and personal attention she received during a visit at Collège de l’Île convinced her this was the place for her.

The Governor General’s Academic Medal is awarded to the student who achieves the highest overall average upon graduation from a diploma-level, postsecondary program (minimum two-year, full-time program). In addition to this award, Chelsey received her college diploma and the President’s Award on Monday evening.

“The Collège prides itself on going out of its way to provide students with unique and enhanced experiences during the time they spend with us,” said Collège de l’Île president, Donald DesRoches. “Normally, Chelsey would have found out about the medal at the graduation ceremony. The Governor General’s visit was a tremendous opportunity for Chelsey to receive that award.”

Ms. Wright will be working in her trained profession this summer and has decided to continue her postsecondary education. She will be starting a second diploma at Collège de l’Île in September 2018.
