Wellington, March 15, 2020
— “We have been monitoring the evolving situation with the COVID-19 virus for a number of weeks now already,” said Donald DesRoches, Collège de l’Île president. “We are in constant communication with our students, our staff and government officials on this matter.”

In order to contribute to the containment of the COVID-19 virus in the province, the Collège has put in place a series of measures over the last ten (10) days for both of its campuses. It has:

  • Formed a COVID-19 Response Committee;
  • Updated handwashing signage in all washrooms;
  • Added additional hand sanitizer bottles and paper tissue boxes in all classrooms;
  • Asked maintenance services to wipe down high traffic surface areas (handrails, doorknobs, counter tops, etc.) more frequently;
  • Shared most recent advice from the province’s Chief Public Health Officer to all students and staff members;
  • Cancelled or postponed all group training that would have taken place off campus in the coming weeks;
  • Cancelled or postponed all health programs on-the-job training that would have taken place in healthcare institutions such as hospitals and care facilities in the coming weeks to avoid unnecessary contact with at-risk populations;
  • Temporarily suspended all in-person French second language courses (2020 winter semester);
  • Recommended that all students and instructors move to online class delivery as of March 16, 2020.

“We are already equipped to offer online college training through the Vidyo system,” added Mr. DesRoches. “Most of our students are able to attend class online, which some students already do. With many students completing their college programs and scheduled to graduate in June, it’s important to maintain course offerings while respecting advice from government officials.”

The Collège currently has thirty full-time college students in its eight (8) programs. In addition, there are part-time college students and more than 400 French second language students and customized training clients.
